S.P.Q.R. documents the pictorial results of Elke Zauner's year-long residency at Villa Massimo in Rome, her personal view of the 'Senatus PopulusQue Romanus', the senate and people of Rome. Zauner's new paintings bring together light, colour and space, their open surfaces are made up of richly coloured pigment that is applied with spontaneous and broad brush strokes. Accordingly, Elke Zauner gives each colour an individual and multiple role as an organic reference, as a voice in the artistic dialogue, as movement and structure, and finally as pure colour.
